Juvenile Offender Intervention Network is a Way to Save a Juvenile From Ever Having a Record in Los Angeles County

The Juvenile Offender Intervention Network (J.O.I.N.) is a program through the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office that can be very helpful for juveniles accused of committing a crime in Los Angeles County.

Eligibility:

Juveniles 10 to 17 years of age who are facing charges for a nonviolent, first time offense may be eligible for J.O.I.N. (not guaranteed in every case). Minors arrested for sale of drugs, DUI, possession of a firearm, residential burglary, sexual assault, and other crimes are not eligible for the program.

How it Works:

Prior to being charged formally in court, those juveniles who are eligible are asked to participate in the J.O.I.N. program. At a meeting with a hearing officer, former law enforcement professionals, they may decide to write up a contract to be completed with the minor as a sort of probation plan that the minor and parents must complete instead of filing formal charges against the minor. The contract could include terms such as paying back restitution for damages, attend school, get good grades and it certainly requires that no new crimes be committed by the juvenile. Once the contract terms (probation terms) are completed, then the minor’s case will be terminated and that minor will never have to face formal criminal juvenile charges in Los Angeles County.

Benefits of J.O.I.N. in Los Angeles County:

The most important benefit is that the minor’s criminal case will be dismissed and the juvenile will remain free of any conviction! Also, the County is satisfied with the results if the minor completes the program because the studies show that the minor will not commit another crime and it saves taxpayer money.

Why It’s Important to Hire a Juvenile Defense Lawyer in Los Angeles County:

Knowing the benefits of the J.O.I.N. program is important for a defense lawyer in Los Angeles County. Many inexperienced lawyers might try to tell their clients to skip the meeting for fear that the J.O.I.N. program is a way to get more information to be used against the minor. However, a lot can be accomplished at these meetings and that’s why it’s important to hire an experienced Los Angeles County juvenile defense lawyer who knows what steps to take to prevent your minor from being charged with misdemeanor or felonies and facing possible time in juvenile hall.
